What does my 21st Century Classroom look like?

– more research-based work, using the Points of Inquiry‘s five key areas: Connect and Wonder (based on Adrienne Gear’s Writing and Reading Power), Investigate, Construct (using apps, such as Book Creator app and others noted by Rachel), Express (oral language development) & Reflect (this is a Cross-Curricular Competency: “Thinking Competency” concept to unpack).  This last area is further described as: “A reflective thinker is aware of the processes involved in learning, capable of thinking about their own thinking in a given situation, relate it to other experiences, and identify ways to improve or adapt their approach to learning. A reflective thinker employs critical and creative thinking in order to construct their own understanding of what they are learning and to effect deep and lasting learning” (BC Ministry of Education, 2013, p. 6)

– planning using Universal Design for Learning framework and Understanding by Design planning tools

– connected with other teachers, librarians, teacher-librarians through courses such as 477B and MOOCs and PLN

– comfortable furniture: I am currently exploring using the Chrome app called 3D Design Something

– Personalized Learning Environments: engaged kids who are getting supports and resources they need designed with their current level of understanding (see Adaptive Technologies and Knewton’s concept video here)

– Delivery: gaming, open concept, mobile resources (here is a comprehensive list of some places to search if you are interested in this area), cloud computing (watch this video on the Internet of Things – it is short, but starts with an annoying ad each time you watch it)

Wow! Right? What is your reality like now? tomorrow? in two years’ time?


Right now, I know that I need to ensure that my students’ interests intersect with the essential skills outlined in the new “Big Ideas”-based curriculum. It is that area where two circles meet on a venn diagram – a small slice – that I aim to incorporate in a more comprehensive way in my future classroom. The discussion forum is an interesting read as there are so many different ways we can approach the changes coming down the line regarding curriculum requirements.

  1. It is interesting to explore how our teaching methods need to adapt to meet the needs of the 21st century learner. I look forward to reading more about how you plan to create your 21st century classroom. I find the Backward Design Method is also a great way for planning inquiry based units.

  3. Great brainstorm! Your ideas are very interesting, and pushing the envelope on some of the technology and pedagogy (which I love!). You are diving in, exploring and analyzing, inspiring and path-finding. Your reflective nature is also very helpful in communicating your rationale and motivations for these changes to your classroom and program, which is ultimately very valuable for any of your visitors.
